MySpace

MySpace is an online service where any individual can set up their own unique personal profile. It is a social networking website offering an interactive, user-submitted network of friends, personal profiles, blogs, groups, photos, music and videos.

Basically it allows members to set up their unique personal profile that can be linked together through networks of friends. Individuals can share their own stories, photos, comments, likes and dislikes etc. Profiles can be edited by users as they wish and MySpace promises to have the strictest policies in place so as to avoid any mishaps.

MySpace has brought about sites which provide coding for layouts and comments to use on MySpace. It really does become your own individual space, and whether you wish to keep it as your own personal journal or share it with friends, or even the whole world, is entirely up to you.

Unfortunately however, you may want to watch out for being too candid and descriptive as this has been used against individuals before. Some individuals were refused jobs as their prospective companies had found their MySpace journal and did not like the person’s lifestyle or shenanigans. Employees have also been dismissed after having said derogatory things on their MySpace about their employees, colleagues or companies.

Recently MySpace was under fire, after a 17yr old girl in the US conned her parents into getting her a passport and convinced them she was going on a school trip to Canada. However, she was going to meet a man in the Middle East. She had met this man on MySpace and they planned to get married.

Although her parents don’t blame MySpace for the incident, it has put MySpace under intense scrutiny. However, MySpace also has happier stories that just don’t seem to get as much news coverage. The girl is back in the US with her family, but still in contact with her “MySpace lover” in the Middle East. They still plan to marry.

MySpace headquarters are situated in Santa Monica, California, USA, while its parent company, News Corpotation is headquartered in New York City. Apparently it is the 6th most popular English-language website in the world and the 3rd most popular website in the United States. The service has gradually gained more popularity than similar websites to achieve nearly 80% of visits to online social networking websites. It has become an increasingly part of contemporary popular culture, especially in English speaking countries. The site apparently attracts new registrations at a rate of 230,000 per day!
